BIBLICAL AGRICULTUREBY REV. ERNEST HALBLETB SERMON FOR JULY 9, 2000
THE ONLY MEANS of existence of mankind on earth is through the soil for the vast majority of people. Only a few depend entirely upon the products of the sea which still may in a sccondary way, be supported from the soil. This is why agriculture was called by George Washington, the most noble, the most honorable, and the most useful occupation of all mankind. This makes agriculture the most basic of all occupations, furnishing both the food and raw materials for all other occupations. It is no wonder the land is the best security on paper. During the depression or any other time the next best security on paper is livestock, the next returning to the land. Could it be that livestock plays a role in our soil fertility program or is their importance due entirely to the fact that their flesh is good for food only? Let us go on here and see just why Noah put all the livestock in the Ark. THE LAW OF RETURN Considering soil conservation we find several man made systems which are only imitations at the best judging from the amount of top soil lost, if not from the poor quality of produce coming from what soil is left. Our Creator left good soil in most cases for our use, and also left a plan that we must use to maintain our soils at health production levels. This plan is God's law of return. It provides that the body of every tree, plant, beast arid even man shall return to the soil from whence they came. It provides further, that the offal and residue from all plants, and the manure from all animal life be returned to the soil also. Our all wise Creator provided a microbial life not visible to the naked eye, the function of which is to decompose these dead animal and plant bodies, that they might return to the soil from which they came. The same action of the bacteria is taken to return all plant residue and all animal manure back to the soil on its way in the cycle of life. This natural law of return would balance the account with the soil, since all animal and plant life coming from a given area, would return, by nature's plan, back to the same area. BACTERIA IN THE SOIL The earth worms too are great agents as partners along with the bacteria in their great work of returning dead material back to humus. Bacteria are present, both in the soil, and also in the bodies of the plants and animals, before they die, ever ready to return that body back to earth. This return action of bacteria. starts with any weakness or sickness of any plant or animal life, so life must necessarily vary in duration or strength, according to nutrition received from the soil, where it grew, or from which it was fed. Thus we have malnutrition or disease as we call it. These two natural agencies, bacteria and the earth worms, properly fed to make humus, as they will, would put all scientists and their test tubes out of business forever. There are different kinds of bacteria or microbes, all of which have different functions in all life. In all animal bodies there are those whose function is beneficial without which life is impossible. On the other hand we have those whose function is utilized in the decomposition processes. Some are agents of digestion, in animal bodies, while in plants, these same natural agencies have similar work to perform. So we see that the Law of Return is old as any life on earth. It has never been changed, and it never will be, any more than any other of God's laws. CO-OPERATING WITH NATURE Then the work of these natural agencies is completed, they have given to the soil and to mankind what is called humus. Nothing is unclean of itself and of course everything in nature has its place. Complete decomposition gives us humus even better than the produce from which it came, so as the cycle builds up life becomes stronger. With the cycle going down, life gets weaker. Most of the time we farmers interfering with substitutes, and even with poison remedies and sprays, make life weaker. There is no fertility or soil conservation without the humus, and consequently no life without it. It is impossible for mere man to make plant food. He never has and he never will make any. Man's attempt to make plant food or fertility has had the net result of causing malnutrition or disease and death prematurely to the extent of the entire downfall of many nations and races. Unless America facts about, recognizing the Natural Law of Return, in place of the poison chemical way, this last great nation will go down even faster than all the others have gone. All nations have, and always will prosper accordingly as they live in harmony with God's Spiritual and Physical laws. Without close co-operation with nature, especially by our farmers, it will be only a fifty-fifty chance of avoiding a food famine before the next fifty years. It certainly behooves every one, farmer and all to raise his own menu or see that it is raised according to the soil health standards. Let the farmers take the lead and may what we have left to sell be fit to offer for sale to our fellow men. May we as farmers learn to conform to God's natural laws which is the real science of agriculture deriving life and health from the soil, instead of depending upon veterinarians and doctors to try to stamp out diseases. Humus, which is nature's own protective food, for that continual new life, which is to come from the soil, is the only plant food that will ever be known to man. Any other method will mean continued weakness, disease and premature death. Working with nature, we find the farmer and gardener as well as the fruit grower using all animal manures, plant residues, mulch, green manure, and diversified rotation of crops to the highest degree. Soil scientists who are health minded agree that our soil cannot be kept at health production levels without the animal manures.
